There's so much great YA out there that deals with mental illness, family dysfunction, and other heavy topics. But there aren't all that many that deal specifically with shyness and it's wily cousin, performance anxiety. I wanted to write about an atypical 'star', someone who has deep reluctance to the performative aspects of her sport. And of course, as a surfer myself, I was dying to write a book that shares and describes the thrill of riding waves, and having a spiritual relationship to the ocean. I hope readers will come away with a deeper understanding of social phobias, and a deeper stoke to get their own butts in gear and out in the waves!
