Joe Fontenot To learn the difference between a thick skin and a tough skin. The first is supple, allows you to incorporate change, and still be a person. The second is like armor, nothing in and nothing out. The first comes out of a lot of hurt--and that's okay. The second come from getting hurt and then running away instead of working through it. The first is, I think, the successful path.
Joe Fontenot Two things. I plan ahead of time where I want to go. Before I start writing, I know the end goal. Doing that means I'm only filling in the middle part. And second, I write as regularly as I can (to make it like a habit). That helps in the willpower department.

Oh, and a third thing: I try only to focus on what interests me. That can change in the middle of a project, so the first two things help this by keeping me on the straight and narrow.
