Amy Dupcak That's a toughie! I’ve always loved writing short stories because I prefer subtle moments of impact over high-stakes drama. Since a short story is less of a commitment for a reader, it also allows me to be more experimental and shine a light on a character's development. An epiphany is often at the heart of the short story, so it’s a character’s private realization or observation that I’m writing toward, not a show-stopping climax.

However, I'm naturally verbose, so I find it very hard write with an intended word count. I love the open air of a novel...there's so much more room to play in! And though a novel is much more intimidating and the reward for finishing a short story is more immediate, I'm enjoying the longer timeline of my novel-in-progress, which gives me the chance to follow my characters over the course of their lives.
