I’ve always wanted to write a crime novel which spans generations. A story in which the sins of the past come back to haunt our present-day protagonists. I love reading about people with dark secrets – I mean, who doesn’t right? – and I’m fascinated by the lengths desperate people will go to to bury their past. I also love police procedurals and psychological thrillers - and I wanted to combine the two. Two O’Clock Boy was the end result. I hope you enjoy reading it as much as I loved writing it!

Keep going. Never compare yourself to all your favourite writers, because that way you’re bound to feel inadequate – I know I do. Remind yourself that you’re the only person who can tell your story, the one in your head – nobody else on earth can tell it, just you. Keep going, get it down on paper. You can write when and where you like – and there’s no rush. Writing 100 words a week is as valid and useful as writing a thousand. Just keep going.

It’s wonderful be able to do something that you love. As I said above, writing, sharing stories with others, is a privelage, and I never forget that. And the great thing about it is you don’t need any special equipment – a pen and paper, maybe – nor any special training or certificates. All you need to do is make stuff up, take the reader somewhere incredible, and you’re off and flying.

It’s not something I’ve ever had a problem with, to be honest. I’m not the youngest writer around – despite my *cough* youthful looks – and I feel full of writing energy, like I’m making up for lost time. Never say never, though! Some days writing is hard, and other days it feels easy, but it’s never, ever a chore – it’s a privilege to be able to do what I do. Actually, there’s a page on Goodreads full of inspirational quotes about overcoming writer’s block – it’s worth checking out.
