As a child, I had a very unsettling memory: violent death in another life. Perhaps I might find some record of it in ancient documents.

Oddly enough, the first “couple” that comes to mind are Horton and the tiny speck of dust that turned out to be a world of Who’s—not exactly a “couple” but it begins with one small voice asking for help from a larger creature. Once he hears the tiny voice, Horton protects this nearly invisible world with his life, despite threats and harassment, until the other animals acknowledge it’s existence and agree to keep it safe. It’s important that we (elephants) stand up for those who are invisible and whose diminutive voices are not easily heard—no matter how daunting it might be. Those of us who are lucky enough to have size and power and resources have an obligation to look out for those who don’t, to the best of our ability. The Who's are appreciative, and as devoted to Horton as he is to them. Compassion is a virtue that promotes peace and benefits us all.
