If they're aspiring novelists, I would recommend they join a critique good with fellow fiction writers. One of the best ways to learn how to write well is to write a lot, even though some of it will not be great. Write every day. Also, I would recommend that they read good fiction. Reading good fiction is almost as important as learning how to write well.
