My best advice for writer's both young and old is to daydream. There's plenty of time in the day to let your mind wander. I've come up with some of my best storylines and characters while sitting on the bus to work, or while shovelling the sidewalk. Once that light bulb goes on above your head, repeat the thought over and over until you get a chance to write it down. Then run with it!
