I love this question because I just finished the "The Magicians" series by Lev Grossman and it's mostly about a fictional world that "real" characters travel to. My first love as a reader was fantasy so my impulse is to say Middle Earth because I have loved The Lord of The Rings since I was about 10.

My most recent book is a non-fiction book about business measurement (key performance indicators or KPIs). I've taught and coached people on KPIs for more than 25 years and decided finally that I had something unique to say about it.

For plays, which is most of the fiction I write, I get inspired by seeing or imagining interesting people in interesting situations. For non-fiction, I get inspired when I realize that I have a point of view on something that lots of people DON'T have a point of view on. For poetry, my own emotional reaction to something is my inspiration.

Writer's block (for me) is all about my evil internal editor that doesn't just want me to write, it wants me to write something perfect. So I deal with writer's block by writing anything, usually stream of consciousness stuff, until the good stuff starts flowing.
