Kaela Coble I'm just finishing editing a draft of my next novel, which is the story about two best friends, one of which kills the other one's fiance in a car accident on the night of the engagement party. I've also started a rough draft about a seemingly idyllic family with three sisters, a deceased mother, and a father who are all hiding major things from each other.
Kaela Coble Well first, I think as long as you write, you ARE a writer. If you're an aspiring published author, on the other hand, I have a ton of advice but the most important thing is to keep writing no matter what, and to keep trying no matter what. Don't give up after your first book, and don't put all your eggs in the first book basket. My first book (several versions of it) are collecting dust on a shelf, and letting it go was difficult but I had to move on from it. It wasn't a "waste," because it proved to me I could do it and sort of sharpened the pencil for the next book, which did get published.
Kaela Coble The feeling you get when you're done writing for the day!
Kaela Coble I have a pretty strict writing routine - one hour a day, at minimum, in the morning. I think this actually helps prevent writer's block because after so long doing this it's like a trained muscle. At the designated time, my brain knows it's time to write. Of course, there are times 20 minutes in when I'm like "ermmmmmm," and in those times I usually find that switching to handwriting (a less intimidating medium for me, for some reason), the ideas can get flowing again.
