Hi Charlotte
Thanks for stopping by.
You've asked a really great question and I'll try and do it justice.
If you have read The Charm Of Revenge, you'll know it is complex and very layered. I wrote it in that way so that readers that go back and read it again will discover new details and threads that they may have missed the first time.
One of the reviewers wrote that even the skeletons in the closet have skeletons in the closet, and it's true. All of the players have a deep and checkered history, which you will discover as the story unfolds.
So, as you can already tell, the answer to your question is no, I don't "write from the hip". I take a lot of time and hire the very best professionals in the business to ensure the journey the story takes you on is as good as it can be, and is worthy of the most valuable thing to a reader...their time!
Best wishes
Tom

Hi Shaurya
I’m glad your interest has been piqued.
Many years ago Jean Marc Bar, was starring in a film called The Big Blue alongside Jean Reno, and rented a room in the flat where I lived. He used to come and read scripts there, and it occurred to me then, that I would like to write novels one day.
Of course, life gets in the way of such dreams, and as many people experience, one way or another, it finds a way to put you through the mangle. I believe the purpose of that is to make us wake up and step up to become a better person. Or maybe a bigger person, you know, fill the shoes we were born to fill. I don’t think anyone does that unless they get challenged by what life throws at them.
My editor called The Charm of Revenge multi-layered, fast paced and gritty. The story was created so that the layering would reveal itself over multiple readings. If one were to try and read it piecemeal along with other novels, much of the subtlety and emotional impact could be lost. I hope, therefore, that when you read it, you will immerse yourself in the story and enjoy the ride.
As one reviewer wrote, it is not for the faint-hearted.
Best of luck in the competition.

It would be a major spoiler alert if I answered this one, so I'm going to keep it a secret until The Real Charm of Revenge is published - after the current trilogy is complete. I hope readers will understand, and will enjoy it all the more when they discover how it all started.

Life is stranger than fiction, and after I finish the trilogy, I plan to write The Real Charm of Revenge - A True Story.

The Charm of Revenge is the first of a three part story. The sequel follows the fates of Donatello, Ronnie, Marcus and of course Brad & Lola. Then will come the prequel. My own Hanibal Rising if you will.

Write from the heart. Don't settle for first draft or even 20th draft. Your readers deserve better. If you haven't bled a river writing your novel, then it probably isn't ready to be published. If you let your readers down, you've wasted their precious time, as well as your own. Make it as perfect as you can, then hire the best editor you can afford, and expect a lot more pain, until they also feel it is ready. Then, and only then, polish it again, before you publish. You might not get a million readers, but if you can have an impact on one person, who has invested their time in your work and enjoys it, you are on your way.

When you write, it tends to be in an almost complete vacuum, with little or no feedback outside immediate family or in my case, my amazing partner. All the while, you hope you are creating something that readers will find amazing. That will take them into a realm that is beyond their normal comfort zone, and enable them to experience emotions that get the blood flowing and the heart racing. So, after countless re-writes and numerous rounds of editing, to read reviews from readers that have read and enjoyed the story, makes it all worthwhile.
