The letters in the brush strokes of an acrylic sketch I painted on a blank canvas. I did not know they was there until months later when I took a photo that magnified the painting. Though I can see the letters, I really have no idea if they are just random or words in another language.

I pick a character and a location in my story, and start writing about him or her. That generally sparks the engine, and fist thing I know another part of the story is written.

I get to read the story first. When I sit down to write, I never know what is going to happen. Example from my new work in progress.
"The doorbell rang.
“That must be the security people that Vladimir said he would send over this morning. We are getting cameras and motion sensors put in today,” Nigel said as he stood.
“Well, I don’t know if that is good news or bad news,” Hattie told Marie, once Nigel was out of the room.
“Why do you say it like that?” Marie asked.
“The good news is we will know when the beast is outside, and the bad news is we will know he is outside. I mean, we have no way of defeating him. Not on our own.”
“Then we need to hire those that can. Jabber once told me he ran with a group of veterans that hired out as mercenaries.”

Keep going despite all your doubts. Make sure you get your work edited before you publish it. That will help you find the mistakes in your plot and story if there are any. Spend your off time reading books by well known authors, and studying how they move their stories and characters . It will help you to do the same, but always be unique in your own way.
Never use another writers characters in your story. I say this because I constantly see references to Harry Potter in new author's works. While you may quote Shakespeare as his works are in Public Domain, you cannot use another writer's characters without permission.

A paranormal fantasy story of a family with secrets. Hint: There is a house in Hollywood with some extraordinary people living in it. Unfortunately, they are in a battle for their lives. Before present crisis, only 3 people lived there. Now house is full with 3 lost relatives, 6 former Marines (hired guns), & 2 FBI agents sent to find out what is going on in that house?.

A thought will intrigue me, and I write a sentence or two and give them a name. From their my mind begins to work on it. When I set down and write the story comes together often surprising me as I write it down.

I wanted to write about a female Paranormal detective in today's world that lived in a secret world of her own. I also wanted a location that supported the plot and characters, and so chose present day Hollywood.
