Ten years ago, people noticed that toads were getting killed on a Philadelphia street as they were migrating to their breeding site. My wife, Debbie Carr, and I pinpointed the breeding site and helped establish Toad Detour, a conservation program to protect the toads as they crossed the road.
I was always interested in amphibians, but this led me to focus my photography efforts on toads. Soon I was following the whole progression of their life cycle. This led me to peer into their hidden life and inspired me to write a book about it.
