I try not to think of it as writer's block, more as thinking time whilst ideas percolate. Often a walk with the dogs will clear my head and sort out a few ideas. A lot of writing is turning up and getting something on the page, editing is when the good stuff happens.

I love people watching, and I love language, the way people speak, the meaning and subtext of their words. I also love well written films and dramas which I find very inspirational, as well as other people's books, of course! Writers like Kate Atkinson, Louise Doughty and Kate Hamer.

Someone I know fell down their stairs and suffered short-term memory loss. Unlike Jo, they fortunately recovered quickly, but for a while they were a stranger in their own world and I thought how scary that must be. 'What if...?' questions started spinning around my head and I thought how awful it would be if, instead of your family helping you to recover those lost memories, they were instead doing everything they could to keep them from you. And why on earth would they want to do that?
