I was researching explorers and stumbled on Blair Niles, a woman who began exploring in 1903. I discovered that she founded the Society of Woman Geographers to give women a place to connect with other explorers when they returned from an expedition. The group included famous people such as Amelia Earhart, Margaret Mead, and Eleanor Roosevelt, but also included many less-known women. In particular, I was struck by how these women fought for understanding and respect for other cultures, at a time when discrimination was the norm.
