Hi Kim,
Thank you for your interest in my book. That is very cool about your family, especially since both Union and Confederate soldiers were on the property. When I first began sifting through the letters written by James, my thought process was to first determine if they offered something unique and beneficial to historians and civil war buffs, which I believe they do. A collection of letters from a soldier is rare and even rarer are letters written by someone in the medical corps. Secondly I began to piece together where James and the 111th would have been during the course of the war to get a better idea of where he was writing from and the events surrounding things mentioned in his letters. After that point it was a matter of doing as much research as possible to understand what the medical practices and procedures were like during the war and getting an idea of the things James would have done during his time as an assistant surgeon and then surgeon. I tried to make this book for all knowledge levels. I wanted someone who didn’t know much about the war to read it and gain an overall understanding of the war but I also wanted it to be beneficial to the more seasoned civil war reader to pick it up and learn something new. I hope you find it worthwhile and would be honored if you leave an honest review of it on amazon or goodreads. Good luck with your book, I would advise to get as much research done as you can on people, places, events surrounding your topic and that will help be a nice foundation to start your writing.
