Can you tell us a two-sentence horror story?
Alan Lee My son left for a summer overnight camp, and while there another camper had a psychotic, unexplainable breakdown. She had to be rushed away in an ambulance, and when my son returned home to tell us about it, he was speaking with an accent we didn't recognize, almost feminine.

What’s your advice for aspiring writers?
Alan Lee Copy word-for-word, comma-for-comma, paragraph-for-paragraph, several chapters of your favorite books. See what it feels like to have good literature flow out of your fingers. Your page should look exactly like the page your copying.

Enjoyed the audiobook set of Mackenzie August, read by Scott Ellis. Are there plans for more audiobook versions of your various series?
Alan Lee Not currently. I wish. For some reason, Mackenzie doesn't sell well on audio. Perhaps his humor doesn't come across the speakers. Two books in the Sinatra series are available.

Is there another Sinatra book in the works?
Alan Lee I wish. He's tremendous fun. Hopefully 2026. It's been too long.

Hi Alan, I actually have another question. In Naples when Meg was about to give MacKenzie a fatal injection, you gave the impression that Ronnie killed her. In Fool for a client she turns up again - did you plan that ahead of time, writing the scene in Naples in such a way that she could turn up and do mischief again? Thank you

I enjoyed Hollow Girl. I did find the use of “babe” and “baby” by the women when talking to each other annoying. I don’t know any women who would do that. Did someone tell that is typical or? Now, thank you for a good mystery. I will definitely read more of your books. By the way, I especially like the dogs.
Alan Lee Thank you for the question, Sandra. It's funny, one of the things I do before publication is I go back through the manuscript and remove some of the 'babes' because she says it too often. Stackhouse's way of speaking is based off a couple women I knew, who called folks 'babe.' And, embarrassingly, I find myself using it in my daily life, even with my sons. I MUST stop doing that.

Hi Alan, my question is simple - When will you write and publish the next MacKenzie August and Sinatra books ?? I do like the Stackhouse series too - you left the last one so your avid readers (me) are waiting to see what crazy Jane will do. At least she's thinking about Timothy. To be truthful though, it's MacKenzie and his quirky way of thinking, speaking and imagined conversations with Kix. Please keep writing!
Alan Lee Thank you for the lovely question. As it so happens, I'm in the middle of a Mackenzie book now! I haven't written him in a year, and I missed him tremendously. It should be out in the early Summer, I hope.

May I be an Advance Reader some time? ( I lived in Roanoke, have two Roanoke born children, was a radio announcer on WFIR and WPVR and I love mysteries. I am going to be reading your All Saints mystery very soon--I am guessing that the All Saints Church is modeled after the glorious but somewhat spooky St Anthony's!! )
