Robert A. Goodman II The artist Wayne Barlowe put out a book a while back called "Barlowe's Inferno" filled with his fantastic visions of a trip to hell. In it he made he'll itself a living creature that demons and the damned dwell in and on.
That idea of a truly living planet started my wheels turning and lead to the idea of Nod.
