Nicky Bond I read something by Ralph Waldo Emerson that triggered the idea of someone who lives a simple, quiet life, but who is holding a massive bank of amazing memories inside, without anyone realising. I wanted to write something about someone who discovers who she is and what she wants, long after the outside world think she has nothing more to experience.
Nicky Bond It always starts with a little idea, or a situation that I want to explore and flesh out. The idea tends to brew in my head for a while before I realise it would make a good story. And when I realise that, I start to make notes and think about it properly. I always want to write something I would like to read myself.
Nicky Bond I've got an idea for a children's book I've been mulling over for a bit. I planned it out and had written about a quarter of a first draft before I got side tracked with promoting my last book (Carry the Beautiful). I need to finish it and see whether it has anything to offer the world.
Nicky Bond The shorthand answer is to just crack on and write. The longhand answer is to gather ideas, make a plan, think of chapters, plan the story/book structure, set aside time each day/week to work on it, set your own pace, but still just crack on and write.
Nicky Bond Working for myself and being able to write in my pyjamas. Not having to go out to a place of work is wonderful. And on the days when I feel the need to leave the house, there are a bunch of coffee shops to choose from. It's great.
Nicky Bond I tend to play about online - read articles, chat to people, do the crossword - and then come back to the blank page I've been staring at. It doesn't last forever, it's important to remember it will pass.
