For me, it's the pure enjoyment of creating something. It's a wonderful thing to wake up and look forward to starting work, simply because I'm doing something I love. I get really excited at the prospect of starting a new book. I also enjoy the freedom to work when I like, and for as long as I need to.

My advice would be to just do it. Use what you know, add to it and do it in your way. Your mind has an immense capacity to create; let it out and enjoy the process. if you don't enjoy it, then maybe writing isn't for you. Try different formats, whether it's a novel, novella, short story or poem. Don't be afraid to experiment and find what suits you best. Read lots of books by different authors. Some people plan and others just let it flow; find what suits you. If writing is your passion, don't be dissuaded by anyone.

I go and do something else, Housework mostly. It lets the ideas form and gives them time to ferment. Sometimes I sleep on it and let my mind work it out overnight. Meditation helps too.

Anything involving the supernatural, horror (not too gruesome), thrillers, crime novels and books by Kathy Reichs, James Patterson, Patricia Cornwall, and many other great writers. I read every day.

"Mother of Marlin" was inspired by a trip to an antique shop in Cornwall whilst in holiday there about 30 years ago. "The Marlin Chronicles" grew from that tiny, creepy seed. "Out of Marlin" came from my love of all things Welsh.
