Sue Monk Kidd's Book of Longings. Loved her story on the Grimke sisters. Brilliant author.

Rebels attack the Capitol as part of an insurrection, hunting the vice president. Hunger Games or present-day terror? To be continued...

I think I'd go to Charles Dickens' England, like in "A Tale of Two Cities." It seems that we may be living through the "best of times . . ., worst of times" in our own world, where social inequities are again at the fore.

From my children, as they were growing up. Edge of Yesterday began as a thought experiment: if a young person growing up today was interested in, well, everything, like a modern-day Leonardo da Vinci, could she even *be* all that? Because we force young people to make choices, to specialize and focus on one thing to be *good* at, at ever younger ages that seem to set them on a course for life.

I keep a journal and dream diary. I often find inspiration comes from those pages. I also take walks in nature as often as possible. Staying in touch with the natural world is a balm, especially these days when electronic communications and social media are constantly bombarding us and calling for our attention.
It helps to tune out that noise.

I am working on a new adventure in the Edge of Yesterday teen time travel adventure series. This one concerns an 18th-century female polymath [meaning: Renaissance genius -- http://edgeofyesterday.com/word-of-th...], the physicist/philosopher/writer/actress/gambler/duellist/mother la Marquise Emilie du Chatelet. For the next year, or so, I get to immerse myself in the world of the French Enlightenment (Siecle des Lumieres). Hoping my French (majored in college and studied abroad) comes back to me!

Write every day. Even if you're busy with other things, or feeling uninspired. It's the discipline of putting word to page every day that makes you become better at your craft.

The best thing about being a writer is the time, space and ability to immerse myself in another world of my own creation. It's a great escape.

I find the best thing to do is to take my mind off my writing for awhile and do something else. Often, when I come back to the page, the next part of the story will magically make itself known. That isn't to say that it will come out fully formed and flow from the keyboard in perfect, final draft form but, from there, the story is able to move forward.
