Tracy Chollet On my website, tracychollet.com, I talk about the kind of story I wanted to write when I started writing Alignment. I also explain where the idea came from for the central event of someone sending the ashes of a loved one to the Postmaster in Carnac, Brittany, on the other side of the world.
Tracy Chollet I'm translating Alignment into French as well as working on my next novel, a story that I think will appeal to readers who enjoy Alignment. The story is taking shape, but it's too early to say anything more than that for the moment. I'm also slowly working on a personal project: a fictionalized memoir about my parents when they had only just met and my father was hospitalized for almost three years with tuberculosis in the hip bone.
Tracy Chollet Alignment is my first novel, so I feel presumptuous giving advice to aspiring writers! What worked for me to write the original draft of the story was that I set myself a goal of writing four handwritten A4 pages a day. I was aiming purely for quantity with no expectation about the quality. I wrote a massive 180,000 words. It was terrible, but I had something to work on. What followed was lots of rewriting. Reading books I love also inspires me to write better.
