The list is long and distinguished!
I can never read while I write, the possibility of cross contamination is worrying, but the main issue is time.
I'm currently reading Bruce Springsteen's autobiography and after that I have a whole bunch of books to catch up on.

As a species we humans are already beaming messages into space both intentionally and incidentally. It's therefore a natural to assume that others will be capable of doing the same. In which case why have we not detected them?
So the question is are we alone? Is extinction the rule and survival the exception? If that is the case are we heading for the same fate?
In Ark of Souls I wanted to put humans into a universe where they face the legacy of long lost civilisations and have to deal with the unanswered questions they left.
If that was sufficiently big I also wanted to reflect on humanity's own small struggles.

I don't often suffer from a block when starting out, it hits usually around the middle.
My solution is just to carry on writing, something will connect to the existing text and I'll cut through.
Sometimes editing previous text will help.
If all else fails, I walk away, do something else and ideas usually form.

I have been writing, a little half-heartedly, for a lot of years but never with any real intent.
In 2012 I got my first Kindle and read a lot more; one book I downloaded around this time (I won't name it) promised a lot but failed to deliver. I thought "I can do better than that!" It was an idea that stuck with me for the next few years.
I did not act on the idea of seriously writing until the spring of 2014. After many abortive starts I began to develop ideas for Ark of Souls.
I never intended publishing it or for anyone to see it. It was only when I received feedback from friends, I made the decision to set it loose.

I am about halfway through Book 2 which has the working title "Ghost of the Vale".
Book 2 takes up the story about a month after the end of Book 1.
As expected, we see characters return from Book 1 and meet some new ones.
A standalone prequel "Thorn's War" is already in an advanced stage of planning and although independent of the main series it will feed into the main plot lines. I expect the prequel will land between books 2 and 3.

Just do it.
I'm totally ordinary - I do a 9-5 job and write in the evenings. Modern technology has made it possible for someone like me to write and publish.
If I can do it, you can do it. Writing is a craft, you learn by doing. The more you write, the better you get.
Be realistic - you probably won't be the next Stephen King or JK Rowling; but you'll have a lot of fun along the way.

Primarily it's an escape; a great way to put everyday life on hold and exercise my imagination.
