I dealt with this from time to time as a professional journalist — I couldn't find my lead so I couldn't get started — and, thanks to a suggestion from a great editor, I developed an almost fail-safe technique: Start in the middle or at the end or wherever you feel confident — and then back fill. My memoir, From Under the Russian Snow, was created in individual scenes that I had written separately over the years. For the finished manuscript, I wove those snippets together into a single narrative with lots of introspection and glances back as the adhesive.
