Sleep. Live. Everything has its own cycle. I need to 'do' in order to be able to write. If I'm distracted I put in ear-plugs and get myself into a sort of writers-trance...which my kids usually break me out of after about 10 minutes by yelling, "Mum...where's my blue t-shirt?!"

I worked for four years in hospitals in Ethiopia as a breastfeeding specialist. My book is a response to working with very tiny babies, whose mothers were too sick to be with them. I very much wanted to take them out of their incubators and hold them, but professionally it was not allowed. So I wrote a character who does just that -- she protects an abandoned baby by holding it skin to skin, in Kangaroo care, little realising what effect the baby will have on her.
