Nate Lee Who or what keeps stealing only one sock of a perfectly good pair, and what nefarious world-overthrowing plot do they have in store with them all.
Nate Lee I would advise any aspiring first-time writers to think twice about any self-publishing company that wants thousands of dollars. Even if their publishing packages seem reasonable, find out how much more they charge for their cafeteria-style, pick-and-choose sides. How much more is editing. How much more is advertising. How much for web hosting. It adds up fast. Believe me, I know... :(.
Nate Lee I usually found that taking a step back was a fairly reliable cure for writer's block. Returning to routine of life for a while instead of trying to force something to happen is always preferable.
Nate Lee At present, I am actively promoting and trying to get the word out about my debut novel, Imposter. Come to think of it, this part may be harder than the actual writing process.
Nate Lee The idea for my novel Imposter was born during a casual conversation with my mother a few years ago, she made the comment, "The cemetery must be the wealthiest place on earth," referring to the talents, gifts, or unfulfilled dreams that people take with them to the grave. It could also be phrased with the pun, "He who buries his talent is making a grave mistake." That simple premise made me think of Jesus' parable of the talents where he told a story about a man who went on a journey, but before he left, he entrusted his finances to three of his servants. Two of these servants used these "talents" wisely, doubling their master's money. The third servant foolishly dug a hole and hid what the master had entrusted him with in the ground. I began to what-if this story, wondering what if someone had witnessed this event and dug up the talent for his or her own personal use. As I began to brainstorm with my mother about this theme of someone stealing people's talents postmortem, she got more and more excited. I outlined my thoughts and then set them aside for several months. Eventually, with enough encouragement, I returned to it and turned that outline into my first manuscript.
Nate Lee So far, I'd have to say the best thing about being a published author is my new obsessive compulsion to keep checking a multitude of websites to see if anyone has written a review of my novel. ...wonder what I used to do with that time...
