Practice. I never went to school for writing, but because I read books so much and was passionate about doing it - I wrote an entire novel less than a year and am working on my second. Also, network with other authors, but connect even more with readers who will read your work.

Great question - I pretty much read gritty books that are set in places like NY and Baltimore and those definitely wouldn't be my places of choice to travel to so I would have to go with books I've read as a child. This is a little embarrassing, but I wouldn't have minded visiting the 'muggle world' in Harry Potter (lol). It would be different and I could use magic. You can't use that in most of the books I read.

Reading! As a child I loved reading books and visiting the library then once I grew older I found myself stuck in bookstores for hours on end, studying different writing styles, story elements, and ways I could format a book of my own someday. I also started realizing that the type of books I wanted to read hadn't been written yet or a lot of books I lost interest in, so I decided to write my own.

Definitely my family for the most part, but many of the people that surrounded me in the past and present played a major part in plot development and character inspiration.
