I am passionate about the environment and I wanted to write a novel that drew people's attention to it. But I have played with writing since I was a small child- poetry, short stories. I finally decided to go big. Plus, I read a lot, and have been inspired by writers like Joseph Conrad and Hemingway.

Read. Don't be obsessed with perfection from the start. Get a good, trustworthy editor. Be prepared to spend some money if you want it published. Create a good online from the start. Maintain a reference list of some kind of everything in you book- character details, timelines, place names, etc.

If this ever becomes more routine for me, I will better be able to answer this. But I suppose the best thing from what I can tell is that I get to create my own mental fantasy land for a little while. That and just the shear sense of accomplishment at having created a story when one did not previously exist.

I either take a break and do other thing and to break out of the rut, or I simply plow through it and just write anything at all that comes up to mind, then edit later.
