Most of the book was written on long night flights, in the complete silence of an airplane cabin with sleeping passengers. Writing was my therapy, my way of managing and channeling the stress and the disappointments in my life, and of celebrating the memories with a smile.

The idea for the book evolved over many years as the extraordinary experiences and events described in the book's ten main chapters took shape. I started to realize that my exposure to people in and around power provided insights worth recording (initially in the form of a diary) - if nothing else in order to remind me (usually in vain) not to repeat the same mistakes.
