The idea for the book evolved over many years as the extraordinary experiences and events described in the book's ten main chapters took shape. I started to realize that my exposure to people in and around power provided insights worth recording (initially in the form of a diary) - if nothing else in order to remind me (usually in vain) not to repeat the same mistakes.
