I would travel into the world of Nancy Drew where I lived so many hours as a school-age girl. I read every single Nancy Drew Mystery and was captivated by her adventures. I remember visualizing her neat dresser drawers filled with sweaters and was envious. I moved on to read every book about the Hardy Boys. Reading was my escape from being the oldest child of five and having a lot of responsibility for my age.

I was re-creating my father-in-law's military history for my husband's birthday and planned to give it to him on the 50th anniversary of the Battle of the Bulge, in which his father was an active participant. At that point, writing a book never entered my mind.
