What’s your advice for aspiring writers?

Laura Koerber Write. Then get feedback from people who are not your friends, people who will tell you the truth! Then process that feedback and rewrite.

How do you get inspired to write?

Laura Koerber I wish I knew. I go by the lightening strikes method. I have assumed that every book would be the last one. Then I just got from somewhere the seed of an idea and just played with it until it grew into something that I thought could be a novella or novel. But I can imagine having long dry spells or stopping completely.

If you could travel to any fictional book world, where would you go and what would you do there?

Laura Koerber That's an interesting question. I assume I would be ale to take some essential items with me. I would travel to North American at the time of Bernard De Voto's Across the Wide Missouri--the 1830's and 40's. I would like to see the Rockies and the great Plains as intact wilderness areas. I would simply enjoy the wonder and the beauty of it all.

Where did you get the idea for your most recent book?

Laura Koerber I read a line in a murder mystery; "The town looked like a particularly bleak outpost in Purgatory", From that line I knew exactly what kind of community the author was describing. But later on I started thinking about what an outpost in Purgatory would be like. Not that I believe in the existence of a Purgatory. I just started playing around in my head with the idea of what existence in Purgatory would be like. Out of that came my last novel, which will be published this summer: A Party in Purgatory.
