I've only just seen this question, and thank you so much for checking out and enjoying Below.
I would probably recommend Paths Best Left Untrodden, as it's short fiction, and as such gives you a bit of a taster of the different types of story I write. Some horror, some more adventure oriented, like Below and other stuff that fits into the dark folklore that I enjoy writing.

I'm writing a short story at the moment and the main inspiration to start me off was, in fact, a submission call for stories set in a cellar. The anthology will feature stories by Ramsey Campbell and Clive Barker, so that was an incentive in itself. I have to hope that the story will be accepted when it's finished.
The story is about witchcraft and came about after I read an article about houses in my native United kingdom, where cats and other animals were bricked in to the walls to ward off witches. Pretty grim idea. The story will, naturally, only get grimmer from there.

Sometimes a submission request will have a prompt that just fires off the neurons and away I go. Other times, it's often when I run that my brain is empty enough of other things that I really let my mind wander and come up with ideas.

As very much an aspiring writer myself, the advice I've been giving myself is to write more. That's why I'm doing the 52 story challenge this year. I've written some real garbage in this time, but I've also written some stuff I'm proud of. And that's the whole point.
