What made you decide to write about a soldier in WWII? There must have been a great deal of research involved. The people and story feel very real, sometimes painfully so, which makes the uplifting tone all the more incredible. I've known you as an educator but never knew you were a writer and I am impressed.
Bob Williams Donna, I got the idea of a WWII soldier taking on the identity of someone after trips to Europe. In my head I had the middle and end of the story. After listening to Bruce Springsteen's song " The River " the beginning fell in place. I did do considerable research. The Holocaust Memorial Resource and Education Center in Maitland was invaluable. Although this may sound hoaky , I really do feel the characters when I am writing about them. They become very real to me. I guess that's why I enjoy talking about them with people who have read the book.

If you could travel to any fictional book world, where would you go and what would you do there?
Bob Williams I would go to Camelot. In Camelot I would be a tour guide and tell people about our civility, honor, and justice. I would also wear a really cool uniform with a hat that a musketeer might wear.

What books are on your summer reading list this year?
Bob Williams I am anxious to read " Black Swan Green " and " Death Angel."

Where did you get the idea for your most recent book?
Bob Williams I was fascinated with the idea of a WWII character taking on a new identity and avoiding being captured by the Nazis. I had a middle and an ending to my story but was not sure about the beginning. I then was listening to Bruce Springsteen's song " The River " and the idea for the beginning popped in my head.

How do you get inspired to write?
Bob Williams I got an idea in my head that wouldn't go away. With encouragement from friends I decided to put the story in my head to paper.

What are you currently working on?
Bob Williams I am editing a story that I consider a Pat Conroy type of book. I think it is a good story with a lot of unusual/different characters.

What’s your advice for aspiring writers?
Bob Williams I would advise writers to remember that writing is more about process than product. Just remember to enjoy the journey.

What’s the best thing about being a writer?
Bob Williams Writing is all about process. I look forward to writing every day. I even become attached to my characters. It brings me great joy.

How do you deal with writer’s block?
Bob Williams When I get an idea in my head, it is all I think about. I even have trouble sleeping. As a result I seldom have writer's block. If I am not sure where to go next with the story, I sleep on it which means I do very little sleeping.
