If you like the verbal compression of poetry and you have something to say, try to say it in a way that surprises. If you want to write fiction, and you have an interesting story to tell, try to tell it. Simply deciding to become a poet or a fiction writer seems silly--you need to believe that you have something good to offer.

I began to learn a lot about the Vikings when I started a business selling Viking artifacts, so I've done extensive reading in archaeology, history, artifact preservation, and the like. However, I just stumbled on this historical figure that was thoroughly vilified by Church chroniclers, and blamed for all manner of evil deeds. Something didn't smell right, and I became intrigued by Eadric of Mercia.
