Martha Batiz It depends. It may be a sound, an idea, an image, an emotion. Usually something that hits me right in the stomach makes good material for a story, after I have digested it and thought about it enough.
Martha Batiz I have been nursing an idea that I haven't been able to put on paper just yet. I need to do a bit more research before I get to that point. Right now I want to have Plaza Requiem read as much as it deserves to be read, because it really deals with issues that are urgent to me, in terms of social justice and violence against women which I address in my stories.
Martha Batiz Never give up. Keep writing, and read a lot. Check your grammar, spelling, and your vocabulary range. Make sure you enrich those as you go. And write what the things that move you, that you are passionate about. Because then your enthusiasm will be contagious and we read because we want to be infected by other people's feelings.
Martha Batiz Being able to put your thoughts, ideas, and feelings into words. Finding all these characters along the way and their wonderful stories that need to be told. Being able to feel empathy for other beings, regardless of whether they are fictional or not. It's just great to be a writer, even when you're not a best-selling one or a famous one.
Martha Batiz I dive into a good book. Reading always unblocks my mind and opens it up to new possibilities and ideas. A word, a phrase, an image might be enough to trigger something that inspires me. Or not, and then I just keep on reading and that's fine, too. I love to read. It always helps me to soothe my mind and spirit. And that's very helpful when you want to write something, even if the writing process doesn't start right away or doesn't go as fast as you'd like.
