Don't overthink it. In the beginning, all you need to do is sit down and start writing. It's going to be utter trash, but that's okay. The more you write, the better it will get. But if you never start, you'll never get anywhere. So, pull a Nike and Just Do It. ;)

The current mystery that might become a novel is the changes of midlife and how it affects my marriage. How is it possible to have a great life, still love your spouse, and yet feel like you never speak to each other any more? When your children grow up, you have to learn to date again, to find romance again, and it isn't as easy as I thought it would be. That sounds like a story I'd read because I want that happily ever after.

So many things inspire my stories. Sometimes it's a song. Sometimes it's a story or show that is unsatisfactory, so I have to write it in a way that makes me feel better. Other times, it's snippets of conversation I overhear as I go about my life, or things that happen to the people I know. Real life is always crazier than what I can come up with on my own. In the end, I want real-life emotions and struggles to resonate in my books.

I'm never lonely. My characters are my friends, and they are always with me. It's also one of the worst things about being a writer because I can't turn it off. My brain is always on, loud, and very cluttered.

I do several things when writing gets hard. Here are my favorites: read, get out and walk in nature, and work on a different story. All of them help me in different ways.

Since my first love is speculative fiction, I'd love to live in KM Shea's world of Magiford Supernatural City. Specifically, Timberwood Ridge. :) I highly recommend her trilogy(s) set in this world. There are currently five completed, with at least one more planned.

My newest series (The Wishful Hearts) is about four friends who make a wish as teenagers for a specific kind of love in the future. Kristen's book comes first, and she is so much like me with her hopes, dreams, insecurities, and awkward ways that it was a true joy to write.
