I was actually watching one of my daughter's soccer games when I first got my idea for Not with the Band. (Yes, that's how Kassidy became a soccer player!) Then, during several drives in the car over the next couple of days, the pieces of Kassidy's story started falling into place, which led to her stepbrother Jordan, and then Lucas, and BAM! I had the makings for a story!

Ugh! Just the words "writer's block" makes my tummy hurt! I don't get it very often, but when I do—when I'm staring at a black page and nothing, I mean NOTHING, is coming out—it's incredibly distressing. I usually go for a drive or take a walk, since that seems to stir up my creative juices. It's also a good time to reread a favorite book for a little inspiration.

I love the creativity of writing. It's exhilarating to create characters with unique backstories and goals—and then throw challenges at them and watch how they respond. It's extremely satisfying to type "the end" and see your story come full circle.

Keep at it, no matter what! If writing is something you REALLY want to do, be sure to make time for it. It's so easy to put it off and let other things get in the way, but if it's truly important to you, make it a priority!

The more I read, the more I am inspired to write! I love books that keep me thinking long after I've put them down. In addition, a nice long drive in the car often gets me in the mood to write. I actually get some of my best ideas while driving.
