I find that there is so much of myself in Katie. I wouldn't say that she's me, but there are many events in her life that I've also gone through. From losing my own mom to walking in underground lava tubes, her experiences were were inspired by my own experiences.
In terms of writing, I'm definitely a "pantser". So often I would sit down think g I was writing a particular scene, only to have my characters decide they were doing something else.
