Joslyn Chase Years ago, I answered the phone and an unfamiliar voice said, "Hey, are you looking for another black market baby?" Shocked, I didn't know how to respond and after an uncomfortable silence, the caller hung up.
To this day, I don't know if it was an unfunny prank call or the sinister overture to an illicit business proposal. It haunts me, and I could write a story around this experience. Someday, I might.
Joslyn Chase That's a challenging question, and one I'd love to spend some time on. However, since I'm short on time just now, I'll give you my off-the-cuff version. I hope you like it!

After years of searching for the perfect shade of lipstick, Melissa found it at last when the strange old woman who brewed herbs and potions formulated it for her from all-natural ingredients, the same woman whose son had died all those years ago in a hit and run accident. As Melissa surveyed her gorgeous lips in the mirror, puffs of smoke arose, suffusing her face as corrosive acid ate away the flesh, exposing the pearl-white bone of her skull, making her wish she’d never drunk those last six beers before she got behind the wheel on that long-ago night.
Joslyn Chase John Grisham's Witness To A Trial and The Whistler. Been wanting to read Mr. Mercedes for a while but haven't had the chance. Maybe try out The Cuckoo's Calling. Michael Koryta's Those Who Wish Me Dead looks interesting. I've heard enough about The Girl With All The Gifts to arouse my curiosity, so that's a possibility. I'll take a look at Bellweather Rhapsody because I'm a musician and write thrillers with a musical touch myself. I'm sure I'll read many more books and stories as well. I've got a mystery-writing workshop to attend this Fall and there's a mighty reading list to prep for it.
Joslyn Chase I'll let you know when I encounter that issue. Hasn't happened yet.
Joslyn Chase Doing what you love, creating stories, weaving together the elements that build a beautiful, exciting, and fulfilling experience for readers. I love it that that's my job!
Joslyn Chase Read, read, and read. Read other writers in your genre. Read writers outside your genre. Read books about writing. I find books about writing tremendously exciting, inspiring, and usually packed with some pretty instructive content. Also, listen to podcasts for writers. I love doing this in the car. It makes me feel like I'm traveling with friends. Amusing and exciting friends. Joanna Penn and Sean Coyne are two favorites.
Joslyn Chase I am in the final editing stages of a thriller set in the Puget Sound area. My main character is a concert pianist whose husband and son were killed in a fire. She took time off to grieve and her comeback performance was a disaster. Combine her personal woes with the eruption of Mt. Rainier and a serial killer and it is one thrilling ride. This is the first book in a series I have planned for my protagonist, Riley Forte.
Joslyn Chase Reading books by other writers! I absolutely love reading a book that really moves me or thrills me or fascinates me and that's what I want to do for my readers. Nothing pleases me more than when a reader lets me know my book provided a wild ride, a fun experience, or a thought-provoking moment.
Joslyn Chase My most recent book came about as a result of several of my readers suggesting I put together an anthology of short stories. I love writing novels, but I consider short stories an enjoyable challenge and a palate cleanser between longer works. And short stories are so fun to read, like bite-size nuggets of concentrated story power.
