Write. There's no such thing as an aspiring writer; you're either writing or you're not. If you are an aspiring novelist, finish that novel. That's the only way to become one.

By turning off as many distractions as possible. Also by having a complete synopsis before I begin on a novel. I think the main trick to writing is to know what it is that you need to write before you start trying to put the words down.

By reading. When I read another authors work it either makes me think "I can do better than that", or "I need to try harder." Either way, I find it highly motivational.

The global financial crisis! I saw a parallel between the idea of a magicians in towers, playing with intangible forces and sometimes losing control of them, and what had happened with those bankers trying to manipulate markets in their towers of concrete and glass.
