From the moment that I began interviewing Jo Ann Turner I felt that hers was a story for the movies. Then as I interviewed 75 other primary sources about the standoff, I became convinced! All of the other antigovernment standoffs have been made into biopics. This story has all the drama and all the twists and turns that make it destined to be retold on a multimedia level.

This summer I hope to read Isadora by Amelia Gray; The Potlikker Papers: A Food History of the Modern South by John T. Edge; South and West by Joan Didion; Endurance: A Year in Space, a Lifetime of Discovery by Scott Kelly; The Ministry of Utmost Happiness by Arundhati Roy; Truly, Madly, Guilty by Liane Moriarty; and The Girl in the Red Coat by Kate Hamer.

Technically there is no such thing as writer's block, we writers only suffer from an extreme need to critique our own writing (usually in the process of creating.) If my fingers work and I have a writing utensil and paper or a computer keyboard, iPad, or phone, I can write. I try not to judge my writing as I write and I seldom throw anything that I have written away. I simply put it aside. No one sees more than half of what I write--ever!

I am working on a historical book about a small town in Texas that was especially devastated by the death of several of their own during World War II. I started researching this book before I began writing Texas Secessionists Standoff; the 1997 Republic of Texas War.

I have always kept a diary. I love writing down my observations and my feelings. When I was in middle school, one of my teachers submitted a poem I wrote to a scholastic writing contest and I won!

Before I retired as a high school journalism teacher, one of my students, Molly Montague, who is also the granddaughter of the owner of the Broken Spoke, asked for my help in making a documentary about her grandfather, James White. I went with her and met him and we hit it off. He said he always wanted a book about his 50-year-old honky-tonk and I said I would love to write it.
