David Kerrigan I don’t consciously seek out inspiration, I in fact have so much that I fear I’ll never in ten lifetimes exhaust it all. My brain is constantly on ‘record’, and if I’m not physically jotting down stories that I experience, one-liners, or ideas that occur to me, my brain is doing it for me, even through the night. When I then sit in the chair I’m always pleasantly surprised by the amount of material that is desperate to be written/expressed. This is just the first level of writing, which I refer to as the ‘spew phase’ where the words just pour out, the actual ‘work’ is constructing it all into something that reads well.
David Kerrigan Do, don’t think. This may sound ironic, as writing is in itself very much about thinking, but don’t ‘overthink’ if you can, just get your arse in the chair and worry about everything later, even the quality of what you may be writing. Writing a few pages that aren’t necessarily going to set the world on fire is a far more constructive exercise than overthinking and not writing them at all. It’s the habit of writing freely, and without fear, that will lead to your best material.
David Kerrigan As a lyricist, I’m used to the restraint of rhythm and rhyme, being a storywriter, however, is like driving on an open desolate highway devoid of hindrance. This is one of the many things I love about being a writer. Also, writing is a means to purge the head and heart and make room for future creative endeavours. It, like all art, is a photograph in time.
David Kerrigan I never get writer's block. I in fact get what I call writer's tide, where I'm flooded with many different ways of saying the same thing. The hard part is choosing the best way and letting go of the rest.
