Jane Nickerson All the words are the same. The formatting is slightly different in some of the e-book formats.

Jane Nickerson Hey Katherine,

So sorry I am so slow getting back to you. Reading and writing (but not 'rithmetic) have somehow kept me away from Goodreads for too long.

We hope that PLACE will be out by the end of 2016.

I love to hear from people who read my books. I especially like to hear from a kindred spirit who found the southern gothic and retelling combination as involving as I did. I hope you enjoy A PLACE OF STONE AND SHADOW.
Jane Nickerson And now to answer you, Elizabeth. Again, I am so sorry that I didn't see this question until now, months later. The book about charming bees is made up, but the art of charming bees is very real. I once knew an elderly lady who could do it. Look up charming bees folklore, and you can find out all about it.
Jane Nickerson You know what? I have not looked here all summer. I'm so sorry I took 2 months to answer you, but here I go: THE MIRK AND MIDNIGHT HOUR is what is called a "companion" book to STRANDS OF BRONZE AND GOLD. It takes place in the same county of Mississippi during the Civil War and features some cameo appearances of some of the characters from STRANDS. A PLACE OF STONE AND SHADOW, which should debut sometime around the first of the year is more of a sequel, since it takes place in Wyndriven Abbey and features more of the same characters as STRANDS OF BRONZE AND GOLD
Jane Nickerson Actually the third book in the "strands world" is not a retelling. It was supposed to be a retelling (and I can't tell you which story yet because I still plan to write it someday, and I like to surprise), but the characters were clamoring for another outlet and I obliged them. The third book takes place after the civil war, when the Abbey has been turned into a girl's school. It is something of a ghost story, and you might be able to guess who would be haunting the place.

I have always loved fairy tales of all kinds, but as you point out I am more drawn to some of the lesser known ones. I'm not sure why. Perhaps it is the "road less traveled" feeling or perhaps I have non-standard appreciation. I admit that it is a little bit weird that I was fascinated by the Bluebeard tale since I was very young. I read it in a big book my mother had. I think it was the first thing I ever read that really freaked me out.
Jane Nickerson Thank you very much for reading STRANDS and for passing on your satisfaction to me. I really love it when people like my books. As I'm sure you know, some people did not like STRANDS. But that is how reading works, it is a personal experience. We each see every work a little differently. I am glad that you and lots of other people did enjoy STRANDS. Of course THE MIRK AND MIDNIGHT HOUR is out and in stores everywhere, and since you asked.....I am breaking ranks a little and writing a fantasy novel. Not a historical setting (at least not in the history of our world). I hope to have the new novel to my agent this fall. Wish me luck.
