The honest answer is I make a list of all the other things I need to do: the laundry, cleaning, study ...and suddenly I'm really motivated to sit down and write. Then I try to get motivated to work on the project with the closest due date, and find my head full of great ideas, so I start writing something else. It's a surefire way to have 20 projects on the go, and always have something I'm interested in working on.

(view spoiler)[I guess it depends which book you're asking about. Headhunter was inspired after I read a newspaper article about a surgeon's success with transplanting the head of one monkey onto the body of another. The article touted it as a possible fountain of youth, which is ridiculous because we all know that chances are we'll be demented as fuck by the time we're a hundred years old. We need to fix brain atrophy and Alzheimers before considering body transplants (which is what they should actually be called, but it's just not as catchy) could ever become a legitimate way to live forever. I also wonder how they glossed over the ethics of cutting off young people's heads to be donated to rich old people. But I write horror about people doing awful things to one another, so what do I know about ethics, right?
The most recent story I'm working on is called Severed. I don't want to spoil too many details, but let's just say that if you were to ask any young man what his most frightening fear would be ...this is it. And even if he didn't think this one up himself, he'd put it at the top of his list after you asked him. But what inspired me? Nothing in particular with this story. I just have a fucked up imagination.
