Susan Saxx I haven't read the Narnia books for years, and yet, that's the first thing that popped into my head.

The real answer though is, usually, it's the book I'm currently reading. I love getting into the story worlds, and characters become very real to me. That being said, I tend to read a lot of small towns, as well as always loving Lisa Marie Rice's bodyguard books. Any of these worlds will do!
Susan Saxx What a great question!
My advice would be three-fold, and is geared to someone pursuing a career. 1. Set a time to write regularly. Daily is awesome, as the hardest thing in a new endeavor is simply to START, referring to each actual writing session. Don't think your session has to be long. 50 - 100 words is fine, if you're busy! (That could act mentally as your own teaser or cliff hanger too, and your mind will work on the next installment's content when you stop and go on with the rest of your life. And p.s. That's fun! =)
If weekly is better for your schedule, or whatever, that's fine too. Then write, and don't censor too too much.
2. Study craft while you're doing this. You'll start to apply what you learn.
3. Continue reading in the particular genre you're writing in, as well as others too.
Hope this helps! :)
