Lucille Moncrief If you want to do it, start now! Don't wait around until 'inspiration' strikes. People romanticize authorship. They don't like anything wearing torn yoga pants that looks like work. It is work. Don't lie to yourself, saying it should 'come easy' because it is art.

Read, read, and read some more. Read fiction, read a lot of non-fiction. The more you read, and read variety, the more you will absorb effective syntax and grammar.

Speaking of grammar, get a decent grasp of it. You are less likely to get stuck in editing hell.

And on editing hell:

Plan your work. Write a loose outline. Know where you are going. You can pants yourself right off a cliff otherwise.

1. Go for a walk.

2. Take a nap/go to bed. Sometimes lines and scenes present themselves in that fugue state between sleep and wakefulness.

3. Drink. My favorite is Stoli on the rocks with an orange slice.
