Find what your passionate about (whether it's justice, romance, family, cats, whatever) and write how you'd want to live it if nothing was stopping you. Then bring in other characters that you're drawn to who would help you (the main character) reach that goal, pulling in how their dreams and passions can collide or intertwine with your main character's. A really good story to me is all about creating characters who people can relate to. My favorite authors who do this beautifully are Orson Scott Card (Ender's Game), Jim Butcher (Dresden Files), Stephanie Meyer (Twilight), Suzanne Collins (Hunger Games), Veronica Roth (Divergent), Cassandra Clare (Mortal Instruments and Infernal Devices), and Josephine Angelini (Starcrossed). No one understands the heart and soul of a child like Orson Scott Card, and Jim Butcher is so good at developing lovable characters that he can even get you to relate to a cat (or really awesome Temple Dog). The more books you read with incredible character development, the better your writing will be. It's all what's inside that counts.
