Carol Jones Well, I hadn't planned to, but it's a good idea!
Carol Jones I make my own inspiration through research, brainstorming ideas, travel, reading other writers whom I admire.
Carol Jones Like any occupation, writing takes time and practice. I believe in the theory of 10 000 hours. If you want to be a published writer, then you will need to put in the hours. Don't be discouraged if at first you aren't successful. Keep writing. Learn all you can from others. Think of your writing as a job and ask yourself what you need to do to progress. I have been writing for more than thirty years. Sometimes the publication side of my career has gone well, at other times it has been deeply disappointing. Nevertheless, I believe I am always getting better as a writer because I keep working at it.
Carol Jones The freedom to go where your imagination takes you and to take others with you on that journey.
Carol Jones I don't believe in writer's block. Too me not writing isn't about being blocked. Rather you might not write for many reasons, such as: procrastination, anxiety, laziness, family worries, lack of self belief etc. etc. If I'm finding it difficult to write, I read. I research. I take notes. And then I start writing, even if it's bad. Eventually the right words will come.
Carol Jones I have spent a great deal of time in Malaysia over the years and have always wanted to set a story there, since it is such culturally diverse nation in an intriguing tropical environment. This particular tale was inspired by a story my mother-in-law told me that she never attended school but instead learned to read at her local clan association. It was also inspired by my love of history, and Asian history in particular.
Carol Jones Recently I have begun writing for adults rather than children and young adults. Currently I am working on a story about four generations of one family who are haunted by the death of a young concubine. The story takes place in Malaya in the 1930s and in present day Malaysia and England. It is a story of injustice and heartbreak and I hope to take readers along with me on this journey to another time and place.
