J.P. Ganley I spent quite a few years learning the craft of writing and struggled with that, so I thought it would be a great theme for my novel. I know there are many books around on writing but they tend to be non-fiction books written by experts in the industry. I wanted to write about my experience as a newbie writer and I find writing what you know comes easier to me than what I don't know.
J.P. Ganley To begin with, I have so much to write about - ideas are plentiful. I find reading a good book informs and inspires me. Attending writers and readers festivals is probably the biggest place to gain so much, most certainly inspiration. I also enjoy reading about and listening to authors via social media conversing about their latest book release and just as inspiring, their writing life or any advice they offer about writing. Book launches are appealing too.
J.P. Ganley I'm working on another novel, this time with humour as an ingredient. I want to have a bit of fun with this book.
J.P. Ganley To read a lot because you can learn so much from someone else's work. To take a writing course although not necessary – most well known writers never took any writing course. Elizabeth Gilbert talks about this in her latest book on creativity, Big Magic. I would highly recommend this informative and inspiring book to aspiring writers. Also, be patient – It takes time to learn the craft of writing.
J.P. Ganley So many things – creative expression, knowing someone will gain something from your novel, the solitude, being your own boss, being present, and most of all enjoying the process.
J.P. Ganley Everyone has their own definition of writer's block. Some believe no such thing exists. I haven't come across it during the three novels I wrote. The only block I experience, I suppose, is when I can't think of the right word in a sentence but for it to surface at some later time or day.
