Primarily through reading about the history and development of oil tankers. The actual physical descriptions of life at sea come from various voyages, usually on military vessels.

The idea for the most recent book came from my own wrestling in high school and college. I was not very good at it, but learned a lot about the Greco-Roman sport. The over-the-top characters and story lines in current professional wrestling (as well as the amounts of money involved) made that a choice subject.

Usually by staring at a blank sheet of paper (or computer screen) and wondering what should go there. It is enjoyable when I have some idea of what that should be, and frustrating when I don't.

Not very well. The only cure is to write every day and not worry about quality until revision-time, but I find it takes more and more energy

Read. Writers have to teach themselves how to write by studying the techniques of writers they admire. Writing courses are good for providing captive audiences for each others' work, but the core of learning to write lies with the individual. Ben Jonson said it a long time ago: "Read the best authors, hear the best speakers, and practice, practice, practice."
