I think I'd be a "hunker down in my hidden bunker" sort of guy. (No I'm not a survivalist and no I don't have a hidden bunker in my back yard). If I had a bunker, it would be full of food, medical supplies, radio equipment and all the other usual things, as well as books, my laptop (so I could write about the experience) and a generator/solar kit (so the laptop would work) as well as seasons 1 - 10 of Friends on DVD. I also don't own a gun but if I did, I suppose that it would come along for the ride, in case I needed to fend off any flesh-eating zombie-bots.

Most of my ideas come from my own experiences and the habit I have of trying to discern what might actually happen (or what I hope will happen). Even if something in life doesn't actually go the way I expect or hope it will, I can still write a story in which it does.

The ability to form and create absolutely anything you want and the thrill of turning that mental creation into a descriptive story that others will enjoy. I guess it's the same thing that painters, musicians and filmmakers love about their respective crafts.

I switch off. I go and read a book, watch a movie, hit the gym, etc. The creative mind cannot be forced. Ideas form when you let the subconscious mind mix and meld your dreams, experiences and feelings.
